Quakercamp: A new kind of Friends gathering

thanks_be.jpgThis past June, over 80 Friends from 17 yearly meetings spent a week together in Barnesville, Ohio, to explore what Spirit-led Quakerism is about at its core - and to experience it together. This was truly a "gathering with a difference" - with most of the week left unplanned and open to the leading of the Spirit.

Young adult and older Friends together spent time listening to ways the winds of the Spirit were blowing through their lives. You can get a sense of what took place by reading the:

Epistle from Quakercamp at Stillwater

and a Friends Journal article called

Quakercamp at Barnesville - blessed by the witness of God

susan_jack_mtgrm_above.jpgThere is much more information about last summer's gathering including talks by Susan & Jack Smith of Ohio Yearly Meeting, other accounts of the gathering, a typical day's schedule, & a list of the attenders at

Quakercamp 2007.

Another Quakercamp will be held this coming June 22-28 in Barnesville.

Walking_to_lunchW.JPGThis gathering will begin just after a separate Conservative Friends gathering that is being held at the same location June 20-22. Friends General Conference gathering is being held about 3 hours away at Johnstown PA from June 28-July 4. Gathering fees are on a "free will offering" basis, so that no one needs to stay away because of limited income. There will be a children's program each morning and evening childcare so that families can be fully involved in all that takes place.

eliz_claire_becca_deborah.jpgOne of the most exciting things about last summer's gathering was the powerful sharing across generational lines between Young Adult and older Friends. Many in both groups spoke of how powerful and unusual this experience was. To see more about this, go to YAFs at Quakercamp.

You can email the Quakercamp planning group if you have questions or ideas about this summer's gathering. If you prefer, you may also write Susan Zeichner at 68 Josephine Ave., Somerville, MA 02144 or call her at (617) 625-8797.

We hope you will join us this June!

promoting efforts to secure a Nobel Peace Prize for legendary folk singer & environmental & peace activist, Pete Seeger. A new edition of Seeger's autobiography (which Peter edited) is coming out this spring.

There are some great quotes from Pete on the power of group singing in the recent New York Times article on community sings around the country, many of which use Rise Up Singing.
