Singing Tips

The Recipe for Some Great Singing:

#1. Highly experienced lively songleaders. We have been leading sing-alongs concerts for literally hundreds of Friends Meetings, churches, conferences, camps, schools, folk music societies, coffeehouses, festivals, and private parties over the years. It is an honor and blessing to see songs in a gathered group rise up stronger and stronger til they fill a room to overflowing!

The usual format for our concerts is to set up a sound system, pass out copies of Rise Up Singing to the audience and spend an evening of community-building, empowerment, and singing up a storm. The folks who set these up are not necessarily experienced concert-organizers (we help out with lots of practical tips) but find it a fun way to deepen the bonds of community within their group, do outreach to the surrounding community and/or to raise funds for a project they believe in. We do this work under a “minute” from our local Friends meeting.

In addition to our regular singalong concerts we've been enjoying leading music workshops, retreats, and concert/lectures. These have included weekend retreats on the role of song in our journey to God and programs at a number of schools focusing on specific themes (peace, the environment, labor, US history, etc.)

#2. Great song collections. Over the years we began to carry around with us some of the songbooks and recordings which have inspired us the most. We keep finding new items we want add to this “traveling music store”! Everything in it carries our heartfelt personal endorsement! (Personal all-time favorites are marked with a “?“.) Feel free to inquire about specifics such as the kind of music that might appeal to a particular child or be useful in working with a particular project.

Thankyou for your support of our work!

There are some great quotes from Pete on the power of group singing in the recent New York Times article on community sings around the country, many of which use Rise Up Singing.
